Reverse description The reverse displays a schematic motif enclosed within a curved arc or horseshoe-shaped border, with a central pellet or globular device visible in the field. The design is consistent with a stylised representation typical of Nayak copper kasu coinage, likely a royal or dynastic symbol. The strike is uneven and the flan shows characteristic surface irregularities due to the hand-hammered production method. No legible inscription or legend is present.

Additional information

The Thanjavur Nayaks ruled as subordinates of the Vijayanagara empire before its catastrophic defeat at Talikota in 1565 effectively left them autonomous. Raghunatha Raya, who governed from 1600 to 1634, was unusual among Nayak rulers for his serious literary output in Telugu and Sanskrit — he authored works himself rather than merely patronizing poets. His copper kasu issues circulated within a regional economy still adjusting to the power vacuum left by Vijayanagara's collapse, filling a practical denominational need that imperial mints no longer reliably served.
