| Obverse description | Draped military bust of Yuan Shikai facing left, rendered in high relief in the so-called 'Fat Man' style characteristic of the early Republican pattern issues. The effigy depicts the president in uniform with epaulettes visible at the shoulder. A six-character Chinese legend arcs above the bust reading 中華民國三年 (Year 3 of the Republic of China), with the engraver's initials 'L.G.' (Luigi Giorgi) inscribed below.
