The Dutch gulden's final decades were shaped almost entirely by the politics of European integration. The Beatrix gulden series ran through the Maastricht Treaty ratification, the introduction of the euro as an accounting currency in 1999, and the physical changeover in 2002 — making this a coin that outlived the monetary system it was struck for. Mintage figures dropped sharply after 1999 as the DNB wound down gulden production ahead of conversion.
The 1999 and 2000 dated pieces were struck in reduced quantities, primarily for sets.
