| Descrizione del dritto | Two standing figures face one another in full length within a beaded border: at left, the Doge Andrea Contarini in ducal robes and horned corno ducale receives a gonfalon or standard from Saint Mark, the patron saint of Venice, who stands at right wearing episcopal vestments and a nimbus. The legend encircles the scene, reading the Doge's name and the invocation of Saint Mark. The composition follows the standard Venetian grosso type established in the thirteenth century, with strong Byzantine stylistic influence evident in the hieratic, frontal posture of both figures. |
