| Obverse description | Two standing figures face one another in full length within a beaded border: at left, the Doge Andrea Contarini in ducal robes and horned corno ducale receives a gonfalon or standard from Saint Mark, the patron saint of Venice, who stands at right wearing episcopal vestments and a nimbus. The legend encircles the scene, reading the Doge's name and the invocation of Saint Mark. The composition follows the standard Venetian grosso type established in the thirteenth century, with strong Byzantine stylistic influence evident in the hieratic, frontal posture of both figures. |

Christ wears long robes and raises his right hand in benediction while holding the Gospels in his left hand; a cruciform nimbus surrounds his head. The Christogram IC - XC flanks the figure on either side, identifying Christ in the standard Byzantine abbreviation. A six-pointed star and a letter P appear in the field, serving as mint or die control marks. The entire design is enclosed within a beaded border. |
