Philip the Handsome was four years old in 1482 when his mother Mary of Burgundy died after a riding accident, leaving Maximilian of Habsburg to govern the Low Countries as regent on his son's behalf. The arrangement was deeply contested — Flemish and Hollandish towns repeatedly imprisoned or defied Maximilian, and the Ghent Peace of 1485 briefly stripped him of the regency altogether. Coinage struck under the joint authority designation reflects that political instability, with issuing rights negotiated rather than simply exercised.
