| Reverse description | A quartered heraldic shield occupies the central field, displaying the arms of the Archbishopric of Riga combined with the arms of the Hohenzollern Margraviate of Brandenburg, divided into four sections with differing heraldic charges in each quarter. The shield is framed by ornamental foliage or scrollwork typical of Renaissance ecclesiastical goldsmithing. A continuous circular Latin legend surrounds the composition, incorporating the title of Margrave of Brandenburg and the year of issue. The overall design is characteristic of mid-sixteenth-century German-influenced hammered gold coinage of the Baltic region. |
