Obverse description Full-length frontal figure of St. John the Baptist, nimbed and wearing flowing ecclesiastical robes, standing upon a small eagle displayed at his feet. The saint raises his right hand in benediction and holds a book or staff in his left. The figure is rendered in the Gothic style typical of late 14th-century Rhenish goldgulden, enclosed within a beaded inner circle. The surrounding legend reads S IOHANNES B, identifying the patron saint.
