Adolphus IX ruled Berg during a period of sustained dynastic tension with the neighboring County of Mark, and his gold coinage reflects the ambitions of a Rhenish lord determined to project fiscal credibility on par with the major ecclesiastical mints dominating the region. The Goldgulden type was by this point deeply entrenched as the transactional currency of the Rhine corridor, and Berg's participation in that system was as much political as economic.
Noss Be#105 is the standard reference for this type, with Fr#1377 confirming its place in the broader Rhenish gold series. The fifteen-year production window makes precise dating of individual specimens impossible without die study.
