Basel's goldgulden coinage operated under a municipal minting privilege jealously defended against both the Bishop of Basel and the Habsburgs throughout the fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries. By 1508 the city was a thriving commercial hub on the Rhine, and its gold coinage circulated widely through the Burgundian trade network and into the Italian banking system. The HMZ 2#50g variety falls within a tightly documented sequence; minor die differences within the 50-series are recorded by Wielandt and allow individual pieces to be placed within a narrow production window.
