Francesco Alidosi received the legateship of Bologna in 1508 through the personal favoritism of Julius II — a relationship so conspicuously close that it scandalized the papal court. He governed the city with a brutality that made him broadly despised, and in June 1511 he was stabbed to death in the street in Ravenna by Francesco Maria I della Rovere, the Pope's own nephew, who blamed Alidosi for the loss of Bologna to French-backed forces earlier that year. Julius II, grief-stricken, briefly imprisoned his nephew before releasing him without meaningful consequence.
The legatine coinage issued under Alidosi's authority spans precisely the window of his tenure, making 1511 the hard terminus for this type.
