Belgium's post-WWI monetary reconstruction required rapid recapitalization of everyday coinage, and the nickel franc filled that gap across the 1920s. The French-legend version was struck for the Walloon and Brussels populations under Belgium's strict linguistic parity laws, which mandated parallel Flemish and French issues — hence the near-identical KM#90 in Dutch text existing simultaneously.

Production ran across both the Brussels mint and, during peak demand years, contracted facilities. The series spanned the full arc of interwar economic turbulence, from postwar recovery through the Depression-era contraction that ultimately curtailed mintages after 1934.
