| Additional information |
Pius III — Francesco Todeschini Piccolomini — reigned for just 26 days in September and October of 1503, making his pontificate one of the shortest in recorded history. He was already gravely ill at his election and died before he could be formally consecrated as bishop of Rome. Coinage struck in his name is correspondingly scarce, and the fiorino di camera appears in essentially no contemporary financial records of any volume.
The Piccolomini connection to Pius II, his uncle, secured his career but not his health.
