Wolter von Plettenberg is the dominant figure in late Livonian Order coinage — he served as Master for over four decades, from 1494 until his death in 1535, the very year of this issue. His 1502 victory over Ivan III at the Battle of Smolina temporarily halted Russian westward pressure, buying the Order another generation of existence. The flat-top shield variant is a die distinction within the Reval series, catalogued separately by Fedorov precisely because the Reval mint produced multiple parallel types without consistent standardization across short production windows.
