Hermann II Wesel served as Bishop of Dorpat during the final years before the Livonian War devastated the region. When Ivan IV launched his invasion in 1558, Dorpat fell within weeks, effectively ending the Bishopric as a functioning authority. Coins struck in these last years circulated into a collapse — the city surrendered in July 1558, and whatever remained in local hands passed abruptly into an occupied economy.
