The Bishopric of Dorpat — a Catholic ecclesiastical state in what is now Estonia — was in its final years when Hermann II Wesel struck this issue. The Livonian War began in January 1558 when Ivan IV's forces invaded, and Dorpat fell to Russian troops in July of that year. Hermann himself was captured and taken to Moscow. The bishopric was never restored.
Coins struck under Hermann II are among the last ecclesiastical issues from the entire Livonian confederation before the region fragmented under Russian, Polish, and Swedish pressure.
