| Beschrijving voorzijde | Central device depicts the Montale, the third and smallest of the Three Towers of San Marino, rendered in fine relief rising from a rocky outcrop at the base of the field. The mint mark 'R' (Rome) appears to the left of the tower, with the date below it along the left arc; the legend 'SAN MARINO' curves along the right arc. Twelve five-pointed stars, symbolic of the European Union, encircle the entire design along the rim. The engraver's initials 'ELF INC.' appear in the lower field. |

San Marino's euro cent coinage is struck under a longstanding monetary agreement with Italy, not by San Marino itself — the Istituto Poligrafico e Zecca dello Stato in Rome does the actual minting. Annual production runs are tightly capped, and because San Marino's circulation area is tiny, most pieces enter collector channels immediately rather than general commerce. The 2002 inaugural year saw the lowest mintages of the series.
