The "bisontin" notes were a wave of locally issued complementary currency tokens produced across France in the late 1990s, primarily as promotional instruments tied to the introduction of the euro. Crédit Mutuel Doubs issued this one in Besançon — historically Vesontio, which is where "bisontin" derives — and the Lumière brothers connection is entirely legitimate: Auguste and Louis Lumière were born in Besançon in 1864 and 1862 respectively, before their father moved the family to Lyon.
These pieces have no legal tender status and never did. Collectible from the moment of issue.
