Obverse description The obverse features a stylised Royal Seal of Portugal at centre, derived from the first seal of King Afonso Henriques (12th century), rendered as an ornamental cross with four armillary sphere-like lobes, each bearing partial lettering reading PORTVGAL arranged around the device. Seven castles and five escutcheons from the Portuguese coat of arms are distributed around the inner field, alternating with the mint mark INCM and the date. The legend PORTUGAL arcs along the upper portion of the outer nickel-brass ring, interspersed with the castle and shield charges. The overall design, engraved by V. M. Fernandes dos Santos, is executed in a bold, stylised relief combining heraldic and medieval manuscript traditions.
