Obverse description Saint Peter standing facing, robed in draped vestments, holding a long cross-staff in his right hand and a key in his left; to his right stands a kneeling senator in armour and robes, presented in a gesture of veneration. A vertical staff or sceptre divides the two figures centrally. The surrounding legend reads S PETRVS SENATOR VRBIS in uncial Latin characters within a beaded border, identifying Saint Peter as the patron senator of the city of Rome. The figures are rendered in the flat, linear style characteristic of medieval Italian hammered gold coinage.
