Additional information

Eugene IV spent much of his pontificate locked in a bitter struggle with the Council of Basel, which at one point declared him deposed and elected an antipope, Felix V, in 1439. His administration of the Papal States was correspondingly turbulent — he was driven from Rome by a revolt in 1434 and spent nearly a decade in Florence and Bologna before returning. Ducats struck under his name were issued across that fractured period from multiple locations, which accounts for the die variations cataloged under this type.
