The boldly modeled figure occupies the central field within a beaded inner border, in the manner of the Venetine-influenced papal ducat tradition. The surrounding legend in uncial Gothic lettering identifies the saint and the issuing city of Rome. The hammered flan exhibits the characteristic irregular outline and slightly uneven surface of medieval papal gold coinage. |
