Obverse description Central field depicts the papal coat of arms of Sixtus IV surmounted by the papal tiara and crossed keys of Saint Peter, all enclosed within a pointed oval mandorla or vesica frame adorned with foliate and floral decorative elements in the Gothic style. The shield bears the della Rovere family's characteristic oak tree motif, rendered with fine hammered relief. The circular legend surrounding the central device reads SIXTVS PP QVARTVS, identifying the issuing pontiff as Sixtus the Fourth, Pontiff of Pontiffs. Pellet stops separate the legend elements, and a beaded inner border frames the composition.
