Additional information

Sigismund von Schrattenbach ruled Salzburg from 1753 until his death in 1771, a tenure defined largely by his relationship with the Mozart family — he was Leopold's employer and the young Wolfgang's first significant patron, financing several of the boy's early European tours. That patronage would sour under his successor, but in 1765 the arrangement was still intact, and ducats like this one were being struck at a court actively subsidizing what would become the most celebrated musical career of the century.
