| Reverse description | Saint Peter, nimbed and draped in flowing robes, stands upright on the right, extending the keys of heaven toward a kneeling Pope wearing the papal tiara and vestments. The two figures face one another on a tiled or gridded ground plane, rendered with perspective, conveying the spiritual investiture of papal authority. Between the figures, the keys are depicted suspended in the field, emphasizing the symbolic transfer of power. The scene is enclosed within a raised inner circle, with the circumferential legend S PETRVS APOSTOLVS distributed around the border. The composition is characteristic of the devotional iconographic tradition employed on pontifical gold coinage of the mid-15th century. |
