Obverse description Central field displays the papal arms of Leo X (Medici shield bearing six balls, surmounted by the crossed keys of Saint Peter and the papal tiara), all contained within a pointed oval (vesica) border. The Medici coat of arms is rendered in high relief characteristic of early sixteenth-century Roman hammered gold coinage. A beaded outer border frames the composition, with the papal legend distributed around the circumference in two segments separated by stops.
