| Reverse description | Saint Peter is depicted standing facing, robed in pontifical vestments, holding a key in his raised right hand and the Gospel in his left hand; the figure is flanked on either side by the arms of Bologna. The legend BONONIA DOCET arcs along the coin's periphery, referencing Bologna's celebrated status as a centre of learning. The treatment of the saint's figure reflects the Renaissance artistic conventions prevalent in Bolognese mint production of the early sixteenth century. |

| Additional information |
Julius II wrested Bologna from the Bentivoglio family by force in 1506, personally leading papal troops into the city — one of the more extraordinary military episodes in the history of the papacy. The right to strike gold coinage there was among the first administrative acts reasserting direct papal control, making this ducat as much a political declaration as a monetary instrument.
The Berman 599 attribution places this firmly within the Bologna civic-papal series, distinct from the Roman mint output of the same pontificate.
