Riga's municipal coinage in gold was a carefully guarded privilege, one the city's merchant oligarchy defended against Swedish crown encroachment throughout the seventeenth century. Carl XI was only eight years old in 1664, ruling under a regency council dominated by Magnus Gabriel De la Gardie — meaning this ducat was effectively issued under regency authority, not royal direction. The "1st portrait" designation distinguishes it from later issues as the king aged, a cataloguing necessity that underscores how few years separated successive portrait types in a reign that ran until 1697.
