Ascanio Sforza served as Cardinal Legate of Bologna from 1492 under Alexander VI — a posting that was less a spiritual appointment than a political transaction. Ascanio had delivered the crucial bloc of votes that secured Rodrigo Borgia's election as pope, and the Bologna legateship, along with the vice-chancellorship of the Church, was part of the negotiated reward. The right to strike coinage in the legate's name came with the office.
Berman 544b distinguishes this issue from the closely related 544a by the specific rendering of Sforza's titular legend — a distinction that collapses entirely on worn examples.
