Obverse description Draped bust of Meriwether Lewis facing left, rendered in high relief against a smooth field, with flowing hair resting on the shoulder and period civilian attire visible at the truncation. The legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA arcs along the upper periphery, while ONE DOLLAR is inscribed in two lines along the lower periphery, separated by raised dots. The design is framed by a beaded border typical of early twentieth-century commemorative gold coinage engraved by Charles E. Barber.
