The Taj Mahal is rendered in fine detail in the middle ground behind him, its central dome and flanking minarets clearly delineated. The commemorative legend 1947 INDIAN INDEPENDENCE 1997 arcs around the upper periphery, with the dates flanking the subject. The denomination $1 appears in the lower exergue.
