| 正面铭文 | REPUBLIC OF LIBERIA 1997 1 DOLLAR |
| 背面描述 | Mahatma Gandhi is portrayed seated cross-legged in three-quarter view facing left, operating a traditional charkha spinning wheel in the central field, symbolising his philosophy of self-reliance. The Taj Mahal is rendered in fine detail in the middle ground behind him, its central dome and flanking minarets clearly delineated. The commemorative legend 1947 INDIAN INDEPENDENCE 1997 arcs around the upper periphery, with the dates flanking the subject. The denomination $1 appears in the lower exergue. |

Liberia built a substantial export business throughout the 1990s issuing commemorative dollars for events and anniversaries with no direct connection to the country — Indian independence being one of dozens of such subjects. These pieces were produced for the collector market and saw no meaningful circulation within Liberia itself, where U.S. dollars functioned as the de facto currency.
