The removal of IND:IMP (Indiae Imperator — Emperor of India) from the royal title followed Indian independence in August 1947, but the Royal Canadian Mint was caught flatfooted: existing dies for 1948 still carried the old legend. New dies took time to prepare, and the result was a drastically reduced mintage of just 18,780 for the 1948 dollar — the lowest in the series by a wide margin, and the key date most collectors are chasing when they approach this type.
Production normalized by 1949, with the corrected obverse used through 1952, the final year before Elizabeth II's accession forced yet another die change.
