Bush's Presidential Dollar was authorized under the Presidential $1 Coin Act of 2005 but delayed well past the original program schedule — Congress suspended the circulating release of Presidential Dollars after 2011 due to a surplus exceeding one billion coins stockpiled at Federal Reserve vaults. From that point, new issues were struck exclusively for collectors. The 2020 Bush dollar never entered general circulation.
Bush died in November 2018, making this one of the earlier posthumous releases under the revised program.
