| 裏面の説明 | The reverse depicts a medieval market scene evoking the historic Hanseatic city of Veliky Novgorod. In the left portion of the field, a group of medieval merchants and townspeople are shown in relief against a backdrop of fortified buildings and trees. To the right stands the imposing Cathedral of Saint Sophia of Novgorod with its characteristic rounded domes rendered in fine detail. At the centre base, the civic arms of Veliky Novgorod — featuring a bear, fish, and trident motif on a shield — are displayed prominently. The Cyrillic legend 'ВЕЛИКИЙ НОВГОРОД' (Novgorod the Great) arcs boldly across the upper field. |

Niue has long served as a licensing vehicle for commemorative programs designed and marketed almost entirely outside the island itself. This dollar is part of a Russian-market series celebrating medieval cities, produced under a bilateral arrangement that gave Niuean legal-tender status to coins conceived, struck, and sold primarily to Russian collectors. The series drew on renewed domestic interest in pre-Mongol Rus history during the 2000s.
Novgorod avoided Mongol sacking in 1238 — the armies turned back, likely due to the spring thaw making the marshlands impassable.
