Obverse description Diademed effigy of Queen Elizabeth II facing right, positioned at top center against a polished black field. One of twelve issues in Cook Islands' zodiac series released in 2003, these dollars were struck for the collector market and saw no circulation whatsoever. The Cook Islands has used New Zealand currency domestically since 1995, making its own coinage essentially a licensing operation — the issuing authority is real, but the monetary function is entirely notional.
