Niue has operated a profitable licensing arrangement with Lucasfilm since the early 2000s, producing a long run of Star Wars character coins that function almost entirely as collectibles rather than currency. This piece, part of that series, was never intended to circulate — Niue's actual monetary needs are met through New Zealand dollars, and its nominal face value is essentially a legal fiction required for coin status.
