Issued as part of Australia's long-running series of silver dollars honoring figures in classical music, this piece marks the centenary of Mahler's death in 1911. Mahler spent his final decades navigating the brutal politics of the Vienna Court Opera, where he was forced to convert from Judaism to Catholicism in 1897 simply to secure the director's post — a compromise that defined, and ultimately exhausted, his conducting career even as his compositional output remained fiercely uncompromising.
