| Obverse description | The obverse features the fourth definitive effigy of Queen Elizabeth II as sculpted by Ian Rank-Broadley, depicting the crowned and draped bust of the monarch in right-facing profile. The Queen wears the George IV State Diadem and a pearl necklace with drop earring. The portrait is set within a beaded inner border against a deeply mirrored black proof field. The legend reads ELIZABETH II to the left and NIUE to the upper centre, with ONE DOLLAR to the right and the date 2012 at the base. |

In 1908, Harry Dutton and Murray Aunger completed the first automobile crossing of Australia, driving a Talbot from Adelaide to Darwin through terrain that had no roads, no fuel depots, and near-total absence of mechanical assistance. The journey took 51 days. Niue has issued commemorative silver dollars under licensing arrangements since the 1970s, functioning essentially as a revenue mechanism — the coins are legal tender on paper but have never circulated on the island.
