Niue has operated a prolific licensed collectibles coin program since the early 2000s, issuing legal tender under bilateral agreement with New Zealand, which retains responsibility for the territory's monetary affairs. The Star Wars series, of which this piece is part, was produced by the New Zealand Mint on Niue's behalf and timed to ride sustained franchise demand ahead of Disney's 2012 acquisition of Lucasfilm — a deal announced in October of that year for $4.05 billion.
