Obverse description Right-facing draped bust of Queen Elizabeth II wearing the George IV State Diadem, drop earring, and a beaded necklace, rendered in fine relief. The legend ELIZABETH II arcs along the left field and COOK ISLANDS along the right field, with the date 2003 positioned in the lower exergue. The portrait is consistent with the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy style used on Commonwealth coinage of this period. A beaded border runs along the coin's rim.

The coloured insert is set within a raised plain annular border, outside of which the legend HISTORIC SHIPS OF THE WORLD arcs along the upper field and ONE DOLLAR along the lower field, separated by two raised pellets at each side. A beaded border encircles the rim.
