New Zealand's 1989 dollar series marked the final year of the large copper-nickel dollar before the 1990 coinage reform drastically reduced the size of the entire circulation series. The swimmer reverse was part of a broader effort to feature New Zealand sporting identity on everyday coinage during the lead-up to the 1990 Commonwealth Games held in Auckland — the only time New Zealand has hosted the Games.
