Australia's commemorative dollar program in the early 1990s was prolific to the point of controversy — collectors and dealers alike debated whether the Royal Australian Mint was overproducing proof issues and eroding their long-term value. The Barcelona series was part of that wave, issued ahead of the 1992 Games in which Australia sent 295 athletes and returned with 27 medals, its strongest Olympic performance in decades at that point.
