The Black Robin conservation campaign became an international story in the early 1980s when Don Merton and the New Zealand Wildlife Service intervened to save a population that had collapsed to just five birds — including a single breeding female, "Old Blue." By 1984, when this coin was struck, the recovery program was already being cited as one of the few genuine rescues of a species from near-certain extinction, which gave the issue immediate resonance beyond routine commemorative coinage.
The .925 silver proof was struck at the Royal Australian Mint under contract.
