Virginia's entry in the American Innovation dollar series honors Cyrus McCormick's mechanical reaper, developed on his family's farm in Rockbridge County and demonstrated for the first time in 1831. The reaper mechanized grain harvesting so thoroughly that it restructured rural labor markets across the American Midwest within a generation — McCormick later moved production to Chicago, a city whose growth was substantially shaped by his factory.
The American Innovation series was authorized under Public Law 115-197 in 2018, with one state issued per quarter. These dollars are not intended for circulation and are sold directly by the Mint in collector formats.
