Reverse description The reverse presents a detailed depiction of the dial of an early rotary telephone, commemorating Alexander Graham Bell's invention of the telephone in Massachusetts. The circular dial dominates the field, featuring ten finger holes arranged around a central hub, each hole accompanied by its corresponding digit and associated alphabetic letter group (ABC/2, DEF/3, GHI/4, JKL/5, MNO/6, PRS/7, TUV/8, WXY/9, O, and 1); the word Tele-phone is inscribed in flowing script at the center of the dial. The legend MASSACHUSETTS arcs along the upper border and UNITED STATES OF AMERICA is inscribed along the lower border, with engravers' initials ESD and EC visible at the lower left and lower right of the exergue respectively.
