Issued to mark the 35th anniversary of the National Bank of Abu Dhabi, founded in 1968 as the UAE's first national bank — predating the federation itself by three years. NBAD was established under the direct patronage of Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, whose influence over the institution remained personal throughout his rule. He died in November 2004, less than two years after this coin was struck.
