Reverse description The reverse displays a crowned heraldic shield bearing the pales of Aragon, the vertical bars clearly visible within the escutcheon, surmounted by a small cross. The shield is centrally positioned within the field and surrounded by a partial circular Latin legend. The overall design reflects the Aragonese dynastic identity of King Martin I of Sicily, executed in the crude style typical of small hammered billon issues of the period.

Additional information

Martin I of Aragon inherited Sicily through his wife Maria and spent much of his reign attempting to stabilize an island that had been torn by baronial factionalism for decades. These billon denari were struck in very small module at a time when Sicily's coinage had been systematically debased across the preceding century, the silver content reduced to near-negligible levels as successive rulers extracted what they could from a financially exhausted administration.
