| Reverse description | Saint Peter, nimbate and robed, is depicted standing facing in frontal hieratic pose, his right hand raised in benediction and his left hand holding a large key raised over his left shoulder. The figure is rendered in the schematic, linear style characteristic of medieval Italian hammered coinage, with drapery folds suggested by simplified incised lines. The surrounding legend, in uncial script and punctuated by pellets or stars, identifies the patron saint of the city. The irregular flan and variable strike are consistent with late 14th-century Lucchese billon production. |
