Gustav Vasa struck this daler in direct imitation of the German Joachimsthaler, a deliberate political move as much as a monetary one — Sweden had only just broken from the Kalmar Union and the Catholic Church, and issuing a large silver coin on the international standard was a statement of sovereign legitimacy. The silver came largely from the Sala mine in Västmanland, which Vasa had aggressively brought under Crown control after his seizure of power in 1523.
The "Spiran" designation distinguishes this emission within Vasa's complex daler sequence. Fewer than a handful of institutions hold examples in collectible condition.
