Batenburg was a minor lordship on the Maas in Gelderland, and its lords exploited the legal ambiguity of the early Revolt years to strike silver of questionable authorization. Herman Dirk van Bronckhorst-Batenburg issued multiple daalder types during the late 1570s, a period when provincial minting rights were disputed and oversight from the States General remained inconsistent. The distinction between Type 1 and Type 2 within this series typically turns on die arrangement or minor heraldic variation — Delmonte's cataloguing of these issues remains the primary reference precisely because contemporary documentation from Batenburg's mint is sparse.
